PANIC DIORDER WITH HYPOPARATHYROIDISM

Abstract

|
Hypoparathyoidism, or deficient secretion of parathyroid hormon, is characterized clinically by symptoms of neuromuscular hyperactivity and biochemically by hypocalcemia, hyperphosphatemia, 6ind diminished to absent levels of circulating immunoreactive parathyroid hormon.
The literature on the neuropsychiatric menifestations of hypoparathyroidism indicates that hypoparathyroidism should be considered in the differential diagnosis of anxiety disorder.
Calcium is thought to be involved at multiple points in the process of central neuronal excitation and neurotransmitter release.
The role for calcium in the activity of central catecholaminergic neurons could therefore account for the disturbance in affect and the increased anxiety levels seen in patients with hypocalcemia and panic attack.
We review the clinical course, treatment, and prognosis of the panic disorder with hypoparathyroisism.
